Finding a New Stylist

Is it time to revitalize your beauty routine? If you’re stuck in a beauty rut, it may be time to consider switching hair stylists for some new inspiration.  A new stylist not only brings you a fresh perspective, but their work may give you the confidence you need to take on that new job, new resolution, or just the next Monday!

We know that finding your new hairstylist isn’t always easy.  Start here with some of our favorite ways to research new stylists:

  • Ask for a direct referral from someone whose hair or style your like

  • Use social media to find a stylist. Find the salon or stylist’s Instagram account and scroll through images or videos of their processes and end results to get a good feel for their work

  • Read Reviews - Search out the salons on Facebook, Google, and even Yelp.  Look for reviews that name a particular stylist to see overall trends on whether they might be a good fit for you.

Once you’ve found a stylist, make an appointment and consider these factors when determining whether the stylist is the right for you:

  • Aesthetics: What does the salon look like. It should not only be clean, but well-styled with cohesive decor and good lighting. Does their look and feel match yours?  The same goes for your hairstylist. Ask yourself “is their look current or on-trend?” It should be.

  • Ask for Consultation: Make sure your stylist takes time to talk with you about your daily routine, maintenance, or upkeep you are ready for. Be sure to touch on your current hairstyle including what you like, and don’t. Your stylist should use this information to create a hairstyle that caters to your texture, routine, and lifestyle.

  • Knowledge: Your stylist should understand and consider your type of hair, whether thick or fine, curly or straight. Find someone who stays current with trends and regularly pursues continued education to be up-to-date on new techniques, products, etc.

  • Trust: Trust is a crucial aspect of any relationship, including with your hairstylist. It’s important you’re able to trust them to be honest about new styles and suggestions.

  • Comfort Zone: Find someone who encourages, rather than pushes, you to step outside of your comfort zone with new styles.

  • Conversation: You want to be comfortable talking to your stylist.  A hairstylist you can have a good rapport with and fluid conversation will create a better overall experience.

  • Timeliness: While you don’t want your stylist to rush your appointment, you also don’t want to spend a whole day in the salon.  Find a stylist who respects your time and aims for efficiency.

  • Experience: What type of experience are you looking for? Is a hair appointment your “me time” or is it a chance for you to multitask? Do the salon and stylist accommodate these needs?

  • Accessibility: It’s important to find an available stylist.  It’s not a bad thing to have a stylist who is in high demand, but find someone who can be flexible when it counts.

While changing stylists can be scary, be bold. Take a risk with a new hairstylist and be rewarded beautifully.
